Coal mining waste is the solid wastes with the largest stockpile in our country, and the accumulated amount of coal mining waste is increasing. The accumulated coal mining waste has caused a series effect of environmental geological hazard. The study of physical and mechanical characteristics for coal mining waste aggregation and stability of waste dump is very important. Based on the results of exploration and in-situ test of typical waste dump in chongqing area, the Self-organized Criticality of waste dump is discussed. The calculating methods of waste dump's stability are put forwarded on the base of the study of the strength and deformation mechanism of coal mining waste aggregation. The progressive failure process of waste dump influenced by some reasons is simulated by FLAC numerical simulation method. The studied results can be used in engineering practice.(1) The engineering geological character, coal mining waste source, coal mining waste characteristics, self-property and surroundings of waste dumps in chongqing area are analyzed after exploration. The waste dumps in chongqing area are classed five type according to site and shape of accumulation. Based on the summarizing and analysis of the basic physical and mechanical characteristics of coal mining waste aggregation, the comprehensive in-situ test research is carried out to study the particle gradation, density, water content, shear strength, seepage ability, compress ability and settlement of waste dump. The in-situ tests include shear test, seepage test, compress test and so on. The results of the tests are helpful to further research and provide necessary data for engineering project.(2) Aimed at waste dumps in chongqing area, slope structure character is analyzed. After discussing Self-organized Criticality of waste dump, systematic analysis is carried out about the main effect factor of shaped process, slope structure character and Self-organized Criticality of waste dump. The main failure pattern and corresponding failure mechanism of waste dump are studied connect with the analyzed results. Based on the mechanism and manner of deformation, waste dump is classed.(3) Shape of slip surface and failure mechanism of waste dump interior slide is discussed. Adopting the plastic limit upper bound analysis method, the waste dump's stability and the influencing factor sensitivity of waste dump's stability is analyzed.
