Rock mass is composed of rock blocks and discontinuities, and it does not belong to the continuua. While, as the rock mass hydro-mechanical problem is analyzed in practice, the rock mass is always treaded as continuua approximately. So, the equivalent continuum method is used widely.Several basic problems of equivalent continuum method are discussed in this paper. Firstly, the equivalent condition; Secondly, how to determine the equivalent hydro-mechanical parameters; Thirdly, the character of the equivalent hydro-mechanical parameters. The main achievements are as follows:(1) The discontinuities are classified based on the system of engineering geology. The properties of each kind of discontinuities are discussed. Then, a net-work simulating program is developed, which can be used to form reasonable rock mass structure model.(2) Through the study of the hydro-mechanical parameters of continuua, it is realized that hydro-mechanical parameters of continuua have two properties, the first is tensor property, and the other is constant property. Then, the concept of approximate tensor property and approximate constant property are put forward. Only on condition that the most elements possess approximate tensor property and approximate constant property, the rock mass can be analyzed by equivalent continuum method.(3) Based on discrete media analyze theory, a particular arithmetic is provided to determine the equivalent permeability parameters and the equivalent deformation parameters. And a corresponding computer program is also developed.(4) A criterion and analyzing flow is provided to evaluate whether the equivalent hydro-mechanical parameters of rock mass are satisfied the approximate tensor property and approximate constant property or not.(5) Three new concepts, REV_K, REV_S, and REV_C, are put forward for a further study of the representative elementary volume. REV_K refers to the representative elementary volume of single seepage analyze, REV_S refers to the representative elementary volume of single deform analyze, and REV_C refers to the representative elementary volume of coupled seepage-deform analyze.(6) The research of permeability property of rock mass that unconsidered the coupling behavior...
