Developing ultra -high voltage and extra -high voltage is the certain trend of our country's electric power industry, ultra -high voltage and extra -high voltage have bring forward more high request for the safety and stabilization running and electrical energy quality of the network. Reactive compensation and reactive balance could improve the stabilization of the transmission system, increase the transmission ability, and restrain the over-voltage of the system. Along with the more and more complex of the network structure and the more and more high voltage grade, depending on the automatic booster to adjust the voltage and reactive power is far from the adequacy, it has to improve the adjusting and controlling ability of the network itself. At present, one of the most abroad used reactive power compensation device in the power system is the shunted reactor, the existing extra-high voltage shunted reactor can't be controlled, it is be accessed to the transmission line all along and don't be removed, while removing the fault and reclosing happened in the line, it will bring power frequency and operation over-voltage. How to make the shunted reactor to be controlled is the realism request and the developing trend, and in order to adapt for the rapid change of the load, the reactor should has the function of high speed respond.The controlled reactor is a special ultra-high voltage or extra-high voltage shunted reactor, it not only can adjust the capability of itself automatically and smoothly along with the change of the transmission power, but also when the line transmits large power, once the transient state process happened, it can increase capability rapidly and present deep strong compensation, that is to say it still have the function of reducing power frequency and operation over-voltage.This paper introduced the research evolve to the controlled reactor in and abroad and the detailed sort. It analyzed the basic work principle, basic character and mathematical model of magnetic circuit adjusted reactor and electric circuit adjusted reactor emphatically, and used Matlab/Simulink to process building model and simulation, proved the correction and validity of the method of this paper, put forward the power progression control method and engineering realization of magnetic-valve typed reactor, split-core typed reactor and continuous electric circuit adjusted controlled reactor, combined with the engineering practicality, put forward to the adjusting ranges of the ultra-high voltage controlled reactor. The results had proven that in the ultra-high voltage engineering, the installation of the controlled reactor each 600 km or so could satisfy the voltage and reactive power requests in the long transmission lines and large power transmission systems.At the end of this paper, using the two controlled reactor's principle, it is realized the suppressing of secondary arc current and recovery voltage, and put forward to a new type controlled suppression-arc coil, gave the control strategies and engineering realizing methods.
