A Study On Design Theories Of Traditional Chinese Garden-Passageway

For the unique geography environment and the introversion character of traditional culture, China has formed it's traditional architecture style: the dispersed layout of architecture which developed from the traditional wood frame building system. At the mean time, passageway plays a indispensably part in traditional Chinese Architecture, besides fewness passageway serves as focus in building group,which usually act as the joint part or the outbuildings in large-scale building or group.Traditional Chinese landscape garden has the functional of travel and inhabitancy, this bring on the important role of architecture in landscape garden and caused landscape architecture developed rapidly as one type of Chinese architecture style. Under the traditional Philosophy and culture background which emphasis people should acclimatize nature, Traditional Chinese landscape garden seek to build the artistic conception that "designed by people but looks like created by nature". The free line shape character of passageways in garden (we call garden-passageways)can form the different parts into the whole in landscape architecture design. And the layout of garden-passageways is "turns accord with the shape, curves accord with the trend, sometimes locate on the middle hill, sometimes locate on the end of the river, drill through the garden and get across the ravine", this made the free-shaped landscape architecture intersperse among the environment and melt in the uniform garden. Along with the development of the conception of traditional culture and nature, garden-passageway has formed it's unique represent and construction techniques, and has became an important part of traditional Chinese landscape garden for it's character of multiplicity style and harmonious with the environment.With the fast development of landscape garden and the increase of landscape garden construction, garden-passageway was widely used in modern landscape gardens, many problems appers too. How to inherit from tradition was widely concerned and a question for discussion was formed on how to learn from tradition and how to combine tradition with modern life. Thus, to study the design methods of passageways in landscape garden is of vital importance.Start from the development history of passageway, this dissertation aimed to sum the difference between the passageways of china and West countrys, to find the character of traditional garden-passageway, to study the culture background of garden-passageway from the view of traditional philosophy and esthetics, to tell the fact that the garden-passageway is the 'product' of traditional culture and conception of China. Based on this, this dissertation gives a detail description of design methods of passageways in landscape garden from the view of plan design, facades design ,section design, plant design, detail design. Gives the conclusion that garden-passageway should be designed according to the site, and should be distinct in different garden layout.In conclusion, combine with some examples, this dissertation tells how to produce excellent garden-passageway works by using the traditional garden-passageway design methods in our modern life.
