How to make the building adaptation development better as soon as possible is an important task in current china.Based on the visual angle of architecture, the dissertation focused on the historical study and the compare study of the theories & activities of building adaptation between China and Occident. The innovations are:From the historical view point, it tried to use for reference the body of general architecture history study and revert to the cases in scenes. It mainly studied on the development skeleton of building adaptation in China from ancient to present time and judged the unique features and infections to aftertime impersonally.From the compare view point, based on the compare method and above studies, it mostly studied on compare in skeleton, conception, effect, resources and influenced and restricted factors of building adaptation between China and Occident.From the strategy view point, it propounded to the Appropriated Adaptation concept with the timing, moderation and capacity principles. It propounded to the fresh adaptation design ideas and sleights based on the relationship of new and old. It propounded to the five levels of adaptation development founded on model of Maslow, which included in reparation, improvement, replacement, conformability and durative adaptation from lower to higher level. It also indicated that the durative adaptation will be the new direction of good way of building adaptation development in China.From the development of spread widely and tides repeatedly of building adaptation, it may reflect to the changing attitude about the relationship between tradition & modernization, history & future in our time. With sensible referencing and inheriting and innovating, to shorten the gap, to adopt effective strategies and new method, to make the building adaptation to promote in sustainable and optimized level, it is the significant task for China, it is also the study purport and meaning of the dissertation.
