Under the severe competition environment in construction industry, building product design process modeling and simulation are becoming the necessities for construction project management and planning with the emergency of new design development pattern and application of new information technology. The developed model is used to evaluate uncertainty factors such as design process duration, cost, quality, resource requirements and risk in design process to reduce design cycle, improve design quality, decrease construction cost within the constraints before the design task start, which facilities the analysis, optimization, recomposition and automation for building product design process.This research introduces methodologies to the field of process modeling and simulation for building product design, including extended Petri net, IDEF0, workflow net, structured modeling, fuzzy time theory, work breakdown structure (WBS), system dynamic planning and design information constraint net, which focuses on detailed problems in workflow management and system resource optimization and supports dynamic and quantative analysis. Workflow structured modeling for building product design process based on Petri net is presented. Resource management workflow model based on fuzzy timed colored workflow net (FTCWF-net) is developed. Workflow model for design process integrating IDEF0 and hierarchical fuzzy timed colored workflow net (HFTCWF-net) is constructed. The simulation is carried out to optimize and validate the model. The details are shown as follows.The concepts, characteristics and problems of building product design process are analyzed. The content, targets, requirements and functions of the design process are summarized and the model requirements for modeling method are concluded. Petri net with its extended methods are identified as the main tools for building product design process modeling and simulation by means of the comparison to the popular process modeling methods. Combining the practical situation of the building process, the workflow conceptual model of design process is constructed.Structured modeling patterns based on Petri net for building product design process is presented to describe and control the dynamics and uncertainty of the design process. Formal definition and detail construction method are provided for the workflow structured model based on Petri net.Fuzzy timed colored workflow net (FTCWF-net) is addressed on the basis of possibility theory and fuzzy time theory. The concept of product design information constraint net (PDICN) is defined according to the task breakdown structure for building product design process and information constraint relations among design tasks. The algorithm transforming PDICN to design process model based on FTCWF-net is developed, which achieves the semi-automatic product design process modeling based on PDICN and quantitative simulation analysis to the process model. The algorithm and model are validated through the case study.Resource allocation simulator model and simulation system clock model are developed considering the practical requirements for dynamic and discrete system resource management in design process. The crucial functions for model are defined. Resource management model for building product design process based on FTCWF-net is presented which is proved to simulate the resources quantitatively and allocate the resource dynamically in design process through the case study.A powerful hierarchical fuzzy timed colored workflow net (HFTCWF-net) is presented on the basis of hierarchical colored Petri net and fuzzy time Petri net. The method of integrating IDEF0 and HFTCWF-net is presented for better resolving the modeling and simulation problems in design process. The simulation analysis to design process model based on HFTCWF-net illustrates that HFTCWF-net has capabilities to describe, simulate and analyze the complicated building product design process.
