| We analyzed the inheritance, quality breeding and encoding genes of high molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GS) of F5-F8 hybrid progenies generated by asymmetric somatic hybridization between wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) c.v. Jinan 177 and Thinopyrum ponticum (Host) Nivski. It was shown that except for the same subunits and combination as biparents, many novel HMW-GS and combinations absent in both parents were identified in the hybrid lines, with a variation frequency of about 34.8%. The origin of these novel HMW-GS are worth of investigation. Analysis of bread making-quality parameters indicated that the protein content and flour quality of many hybrid lines were much better than that of the parent wheat Jinanl77. Analysis of the inheritance and characterization of HMW-GS genes can not only enlarge the gene source of excellent subunits, but also reveal the rule of allelic variation of HMW-GS genes in the somatic hybridization at molecular level. Besides, in combination with sexual crossing, we can investigate the utilization of hybrid lines in quality breeding of common wheat. Our research was divided into following aspects.1. Analysis of the inheritance of HMW-GS in hybrids and the correlation with LMW-GSSDS-PAGE analysis of 17 derivatives from F5-F8 showed a diversity of high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) composition.
