Root is a very important part of rice plant. It plays a key role on absorption of water and nutrition, anchoring plant to ground and exchanging phytohormone with the part above ground. Even up to date, studies on rice root are still tedious, time-consuming, yet we have a relative poor understanding about root characteristics and genetics.1. We have studied on rice root by using a new method-culturing rice plant on water surface. The rice plant cultured with this method yielded similarly with that in paddy field. The mature root systems of rice in full-heading stage were easily obtained and facilitated root studies.2. Studies have revealed that characteristics of distribution of root length, root surface area, root volume and root tips during every 0.2 mm interval of root diameter. Among all different 0.2mm intervals of root diameter, the peak value of root length, root surface area and root tips were in 0.0
