In the paper, On the basis of the complete examination and comprehensive analysis in riparian zone along Qinhuai River, soil main biological and ecological characteristics of the riparian zone were researched such as soil main physical and chemical properties, soil heavy metals pollution, soil microbes volume, soil microbes activity and soil enzyme activity, The main research results were as follows:⑴The moisture and bulk density of riparian soil was relatively higher than that of the upland. Human interference had a great effect on soil physical and chemical properties of riparian zone, especially N and P reallocation in soil. The N and P content in headwaters were much lower than that of middle and lower reaches,so riparian area polluted was important pollution source and congregation zone. But variance of soil main physical and chemical properties between riparian areas near water and that of far from water was not evident.⑵Soil pH value in different areas was variational. Soil in headwaters was acid, however that in middle and lower reaches was sandy or loamy, showed neutral to alkaline reaction. Soil Heavy metals content in the riparian areas showed heterogeneity in horizontal and vertical directions. The content in the riparian areas near water was higher than that of far from water, that in the surface layer was higher than the lower. The pollution index ranking of 5 kinds of heavy metals in the riparian zone was Cr> Zn> Cu> Cr>Pd.⑶Soil microbes quantity(MQ)in riparian zone were slightly less than upland soil located the same latitude. MQ in different locations and seasons were different. The change trend was the quantity in high temperature seasons was much more than that in low temperature seasons. MQ on the upper layers were much than that of under layers, but there were unusual changes in some location for human interference.⑷Soil respiration(SR)in riparian zone changed with seasons replacement. The correlations between SR and temperature was: y = 0.9986e 0.0475x r2 = 0.4395. The RI showed visible bimodal curve in one day. Soil microbial biomass C(MBC)in riparian zone was 200 ~ 600 mg·kg-1, which was fluctuant and fewer than that in upland soil. ⑸There were significant positive correlation correlations between MBC and TN(p <0.01),OM(p <0.01), AK(p <0.05). There were weak negative correlations between MBC and AP(p>0.05). Correlation correlations between MBC and TP were not obvious.⑹There was certain variation in different riparian areas on soil enzyme activity(EA). Analysis results showed that the EA in middle and upstream reaches were correspondingly higher than that in lower reaches. Correlation analysis showed that there were significant positive correlation between the sucrose activity and soil nutriments.
