Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam.) has some good characteristics, such as high-yield, high starch content. It is significance to solve the problems of food security and energy shortage. Soil less cultivation is an advanced cultivation techniques in modern agriculture. It has become an important way in protection culture and has more advantages than other cultivation methods. This paper based on the biological characteristics of sweet potato that the roots growing in nutrient solution only could be form into the fibrous feeding roots, which absorbing nutrition and water. The adventitious roots easy come out from the sweet potato vine and the roots could be developed into tuberous roots. We broke through the problem of traditional methods of sweet potato cultivation that sweet potato tuberous roots could not be continually harvested. A new method of hydroponically producing sweet potato for specializing root functions was created. The new cultural method could carry out all year and tuberous roots could be continually harvested in single plant. So the production potential of sweet potato could be developed to the maximum extent. On the basis of above analysis, this article discussed the elements that tuberous root was separated from nutrition root. The mainly content and result as follow:1. Based on the biological character of sweet potato root, the cultivation model of roots separated into feeding roots and tuberous roots was invented and improved. By hydroponics it could be got feeding fibrous roots. At the same time, tuberous roots could be got by solid medium burying stem of sweet potato.2. In order to meet the demand of high yield exploration and production apply. Three type cultivation systems were designed. One of them is the sweet potato tree production systems that tuberous roots were separated from nutrition feeding roots. The over-ground tuberous roots could be in the air. It improved the agricultural ornamental and could be continuously harvest tuberous roots in single plant. The other two cultivation system that designed was stem creeping and sustain in nutrient solution trough. In that the hydroponics device was simplified. These cultivation systems could be combined with close planting techniques, which strengthen the practicability of root separation cultivation of sweet potato. Using on-line nutrient solution monitoring and control system which has been invented, it could be monitor and control the temperature, EC, pH and the content of dissolving oxygen in nutrient solution. So the stability of nutrient solution was assured in hydroponics system of sweet potato.3. This paper researched the advantage of hydroponics system of sweet potato. The examination showed that hydroponics system for sweet potato was superior to soil and solid medium cultivation. After planting 40 days, the biomass of plant in hydroponics on the ground was higher 67.73% than soil cultivation. After planting 120 days, the output of tuberous root was higher 65.96% than soil cultivation. So the hydroponics system has great potential to increasing sweet potato yield.4. The comparison test of root separation cultivation model among different varieties has been achieved. We selected the suitable varieties, such as xushu18 and xushu22. Their root number and root length was significantly higher than other test varieties. The tuberous roots yield of xushu22 is the highest, 21.55 percent more than xushu18. It was very helpful to the promotion and application of sweet potato roots separation cultivation. This research showed that long stem varieties of sweet potato are suitable to hydroponics and root function divided production.5. The mechanism of sweet potato roots function separated cultivation was analyzed by experimentation. We researched the roots condition which adventitious roots grow, the new relation between sink and source, the application of plant growth regulator and analysis it's internal hormone. The mechanism of roots separation was expounded. So the theoretical foundation of root separation cultivation was established.
