At present, steroid hormone levels of the captive Snub-nosed monkey(Rhinopithecus roxellanae) can be detected effectively with non-invasive methods and further monitored the reproduction and stress status of them. However this method has not been effective applied in free-ranging Snub-nosed monkey study and protection. The present investigation is trying to monitor the Snub-nosed monkey reproduction and stress status by dectecting the fecal steroid hormnone, which aimed to offer certain theoretical foundation of non-invasive endocrine monitoring for wild Snub-nosed monkey and promote the development of Snub-nosed monkey protection work. The main results are showed as follows:The fecal samples were treated with 95%ethanol at low temperature(4±1℃) can be acquired in the snub-nosed monkey natural distribution area in the present study. This work detected the effective storing duration(5days,6days,7days,8days,10days,20days,30days) of every kind of steroid hormone. RIA results show that the female fecal testosterone and estradiol stored for different periods have no significantly difference(P>0.05) compared with the control samples and can be store for 30 days;the female fecal progesterone the stored for 10 days decreased significantly(P<0.05) and can be stored for 9 days;fecal cortisol of the female stored for 6 days decreased significantly(P<0.05) and can be stored for 5 days;male fecal testosterone and cortisol stored for 6 days changed significantly(P<0.05) compared with control and can be stored for 5 days..The snub-nosed monkey fecal steroid hormone was kept 24 hours at room temperature and with 95%ethonal,the stoning effects show that all steroid hormone have no significantly change in female and male except for female cortisol. The results suggested that Snub-nosed monkey testosterone, progesterone, estradiol and cortisol stoning effects are not different in different sex and different different stoning condition, which should be differently treated in application. The Snub-nosed monkey GC levels have relations with their social rank,in mating stage, the lower status of female or male individual cortisol level are more than high status and this phenomenon is not significantly in mating stage. The female GC level of is higher than male in the whole year, which may be caused by the snub-nosed monkey polygyny group. The subordinate status male individual reproduction inhibition has relation with GC level in mating stage, but explain individual reproduction only by GC level is not enough and need to be further study.Testosterone has effect on the male snub-nosed monkey aggressive behavior, the social rank stress also promote male individual secerete large qunantity of testosterone, two of them are complemnet each other. The testosterone scercretion peak reflects the degree of conflict and social group stability. The three male Snub-nosed monkey fecal testosterones in mating stage are significantly higher than no mating stage in this study, which suggested that the female monkey have reaction with the male stimulation in mating stage. The large quantigy of testosterone secretion can raise the male snub-nosed monkey estrus, stimulate male monkey reproduce much more sperm, promte sperm maturation and prolong the sperm life, which is important to the Snub-nosed monkey polygyny and keep reproduction interests maximization and population mutiply. The significantly change of snub-nosed monkey estradiol can be used to proceed early pregnancy diagnosis and presume the date of fertilization and litter. The study suggested us not to proceecd early pregnancy diagnosis by progesterone level, which may cause misdiagonosis. The folicullar phase estradiol level decreased with age increasing in childbearing age Snub-nosed monkey, which can lead to the reproductive ability decline with age increasing.
