Objective:Edema is one of the common clinic diseases.TCM has a long history in the understanding of edema, and also has an advantage in the treatment of edema. Throughout its history, on the one hand, some concepts changed, and Some content has not received enough attention. On the other hand, there are three types of research literature about edema after the founding in 1949, which have all kinds of shortcomings.Therefore it is of important meaning both in theory and practice to review ancient literature of edema systematically and analyse academic source and course.Method:In this paper, ancient literature of edema is analyzed by philological and logical method. The detailed methods are as follows: â‘  Collecting data by combination of computerized and manual retrieval.Using Encyclopaedia of Traditional Chinese Medicine to conduct the preliminary screening of the data. Then setting booklist with the combination of Zhong Guo Zhong Yi Gu Ji Zong Mu and Chinese Medical Literature. All of this is the method to collect ancient literature.Modern literature refers to dissertation, journal articles, proceeding papers being published from 1949 to 2014. Obtaining bibliography by computerized retrieval in SinoMed and Traditional Chinese Medicine Database System, and obtain full text by China Academic Journal Network Publishing Database.â‘¡ Classifying original data according to different historic periods and etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, prognosis.â‘¢ Comparing different data vertically and horizontally. For the data of the same historic period, it should summarize the academic characteristics of all the doctors and the general situation of edema treatment by comparing horizontally with general situation of TCM, and analyzing the difference between different medical experts. academic characteristics of all the historic periods and doctors can be compared vertically, in order to clarify the relationships among them and the source and course of edema.Result:This article has nine parts.Part 1 includes the definition, range and related diseases names of edema.Part 2 to Part 8 is the main content of the article. Based on the main line of history, it can be divided into seven periods which are Pre-Qin and two Hans Dynasties, Three Kingdoms, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui Tang and Five Dynasties, the Two Song Dynasties, Jin and Yuan Dynasties, Ming Dynasty, Qing Dynasty. By presenting the understanding of edema of physicians and medicine books of different periods, it can be learned the characteristic of the understanding of edema in different periods.Based on the research above, it raises some questions and gives a preliminary discussion in Part 9.Conclusion: â‘ This paper first review the ancient literature of edema systematically and comprehensively.The academic process of edema is divided into seven periods. By summarizing the academic characteristics of edema in different periods, Pre-Qin and two Hans Dynasties is an original period of edema theory. In the period, the records about etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, prognosis of edema in Huangdi Neijing and Jin Kui Yao Lue lay the foundation for the followed research. It is a period of experience accumulation for Three Kingdoms, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, in which the magnum opus are Mai Jing, Zhengjiu Jia Yi Jing, Zhouhou Beiji Fang, Xiaopin Fang. Sui Tang and Five Dynasties is a period of literature collection and sorting. Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun is heavily focused on symptoms and pathogenesis, while Beiji Qianjin Yaofang, Qianjin Yi Fang, Waitai Miyao are foucused on the prescriptions collection. The academic characteristics of the Two Song Dynasties is a tendency of from complex to simple with the summary of yin or yang edema. Jin and Yuan Dynasties is the first active academic contention, the representative doctors include Liu Wansu, Zhang Congzheng, Li Gao, Zhu Danxi. In Ming Dynasty, edema theory was well established. And in Qing Dynasty, it was more sophisticated because of the supplement of all aspects.â‘¡ Secondly, this paper investigates edema classification, The identify between edema and phlegm and fluid-retention, the treatment of edema with diaphoresis, the oringin and source of Kidney-qi Pill.By analyzing the sorting of edema, edema is a disease with sophisticated etiology and pathogenesis and related to different organs. It is more reasonable for edema to be related to qi-blood and body fluid the kidney. It is necessary to classify edema and phlegm and fluid-retention, which have similarity symptoms, etiology and pathogenesis. Diaphoresis, one of eight therapeutic methods, has been widely applied. This paper discuss the treatment of edema with diaphoresis. Kidney-qi Pill originally appeared in Jin Kui Yao Lue. Xue Ji, Zhao Xianke, Zhang Jingyue used it to treat edema. It is necessary to understand its oringin and source.
