Ph.D Candidate: Yang Shou-Ming Faculty advisor: Professor Jin Da-Di Backgroud / Objectives: Thoracolumbar spine fractures, which maybe involving with several mechanisms, are the main traumas in the spine surgery. The reasons for the different understand and treatments to thoraocolumbar fractures are the fact of the different viewpoint to its pathomophology and the different division of functional units of spine stability, so it is necessary to manage the thoracolumbar spine fractures with a massive theory. It is the main injuries mechanism involving with thoracolumbar fractures for axial compression, axial distraction and axial revolve. It is ease to distinguish in pathomophology for the injuries canused by onefold mechanism and it is ease to confuse in pathomophology for the trauma resulted from complex mechanisms. I t is rarely for the reports about how to understand the relations of the injuries mechanism and the pathomopholgy of thoracolumbar fractures. Can a standard be made to settle the problem that it is so different and variational for the certification of function unit deciding spine stability that different judgment to fractures stability resulting in controversy in treatment? What is the reason for the fact that it has not have a perfect thoracolunibar fractures classification for 50 years researching thoracolunibar fractures classification with great development although and what is the perfect principle instructing thoracolumbar fractures classification? 5 Can a new classification be established according with the principle? What is the relation both thoracolumbar fractures pathomopholgy and spinal cord injuries reported to have no remarkable relevancy? Can an operation or instrument be chosen according to the fractures type but not the instrument specialty now so as to modify the clinical management randomicity? The research is aim at establishing a standard of thoracolumbar classification and probing into the relation both injuries mechanism and pathomophology, both thoracolumbar fractures and spinal cord injuries and establishing a new classification of thoracolumbar fractures and drawing out the image characters of new classification. Materials and methods Reviewing the materials of 589 hospitalization patients from Oct. 1079 to Mar. 2001, including case record, operation record, X-ray and CT or MRI scan and analyzing relation of injuries mechanism and pathophomolgy and establishing a new classification, and then observing relevance of fractures type and spinal cord injuries and prognosis of spinal cord injuries and attempting a new treatment system according the new classification. Result 1 .Estanlishiment of standard of thoracolumbar fractures classification. 2.Establishment of a new thoracolumbar fractures classification. 3.Definition of the image characters of the new classification.
