Objective: To investigate the expression of BMP-2 in gunshot fracture healing. Methods: A model of femoral gunshot fracture of New Zealand rabbit was established. The fracture was fixed primarily with external fixator. X-ray observation, HE staining, immunohistochemistry for BMP-2 and quantitative assay for BMP-2mRNA were carried out at 1,2,3 and 4 week after operation respectively. Results: Bone union came into being 4 weeks after operation in the gunshot fracture group, while 3 weeks in the control group. The cells expressing BMP-2 were fewer during the healing of gunshot fracture. The peak of mRNA expression appeared on the second week in control group. The BMP-2 mRNA expression arrived peak stage on the third week and the mRNA expression was significantly lower in experimental group. Conclusion: Treatment of gunshot fracture of long bone by fixation with external fixator has a good result. Gunshot fracture heals more slowly than common fracture. The mRNA expression rose more slowly and was significantly lower in gunshot fracture than in common fracture at the same time phases.
