This doctoral dissertation deals with the chemical investigation on Chinese medicinal plants, Hypericum japonicum Thunb. ex Murray and Hypericum henryi Levl. et Wan., and the chemotaxnomy of Clusiaceae(Guttiferae)(s. 1.). In addition, the pharmacological research and traditional usages on Hypericum were also reviewed. From the aerial part of Hypericum japonicum, thirty one(1-31) natural products were isolated. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic(IR, UV, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, DEPT, 1H-1H COSY,13C-1H COSY, HMQC, HMBC, EI-MS, FAB-MS and CD) and chemical methods. Nine of them, 1, 5-dihydroxyxanthone-6-O-β-D-glucoside(10), dihydroquercetin-3,7-O-α-L-dirhamnoside(13), 5,7-dihydroxy-2-isopropyl ch(?)omone-8-β-D-glucoside(16), 5,7-dihydroxy-2-(l-mehtylpropyl) chromone-8-β-D-glucoside(17), japonica acid(18) japonicumone A(23), japonicumone B(24), bijaponicaxanthone(25) and 7,8-(2",2"-dimethylpyrano)-5,3',4'-trihydroxy-3-methoxylflavone(26), are novel compounds, and three compounds were isolated from nature for the first time. They are 3,4-epoxy-5-hydroxy-l-cyclohexenecarboxylic acid(9), 5-O-coumaroylquinic acid methyl ester(11) and l,3,5,6-tetrahydroxy-4-prenylxanthone(30).Thirteen known compounds(32-44) were obtained from the methanol extract of stems and leaves of Hypericum henryi.
