AIMS & METHODS Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a syndrome unknown etiology in clinic. It has been hypothesized to be associated with gastrointestinal motility disorders, visceral sensory disfunction, gastric myoelectric arrthemia, H.pylori infection and social psychological factors, but the linkages have not been investigated among these factors. Aims of the study were to explore the pathophysiology of FD on neuropsychology, autonomous system, gastrointestinal motility and myoelectric activity, enteric nerve system, mild mucosal inflammation, mast cells and its mediators. Following studies were carried out. (1) the intragastric distribution of gastric contents and gastric empty were studied by X-ray and Ultraosonography. (2) Electrogastrography(EEG) were monitored the dynamic changes of gastric rhythm. (3) the psychological status of patients with FD were measured by self-rating depression scale and depression status inventory(SDS), self-rating anxiety scale(SAS), Hamilton anxiety scale(HAMA), and Hamilton depression rating scale for depression(HRSD). (4)the dyspepsia symptoms scores were evaluated by visual analogue scale(VAS). (5) mucosal inflammation, counts and activity of mast cell as well as H.pylori were observed by HE and methophenolane stains in biopsy of gastric and duodenal mucosum. (6) the correlations among the counts and activity of mast cells and NSE and SP and 5-HT were studied by immunocytochemsitry in biopsy of gastric and duodenal mucosum of patient with FD. (7)the degree of neuropathy of autonomus system in patients with FD was evaluated in anxiety & depression and non-anxiety & depression. (8) the effects of cognitive therapy and small dosage of antidepressants and only ? Were it evaluated in patient with FD in anxiety & depression.RESULTS: 1. the change of motility in patient with FD: X-ray studies showed (1)There were significant difference of MTB and DGA in every period postprandial, by contrast, there was no significant difference of TGA or PGA between HS and FD. (2) the ratios of PGA...
