Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the only joint that keeps relatively active reconstruction ability for all one's life. The load on TMJ is very important for its physiological function and the development of some diseases. Occlusal force is the most direct origin of that load. So investigation on the occlusion's characteristic must be done by using modern occlusal measuresThe content of this item includes three parts summarized as following. (1) Establishment of optimum designed mathematical modelIn the mechanical system of occlusion and TMJ,force was simplified by optimization theory that masticatory muscles are the motivity, occlusion and TMJ are the resistance.Because the end of closing mouth status is the focus of our research ,the mainly contracting muscles are Masseter muscle, Medial pterygoid muscle ,Temporal muscle anterior fascicle and Temporal muscle posterior fascicle. Two types of mathematical model groups applied to the occlusion and TMJ system have been developed. One is model with an objective function requiring a minimum of the tensions in the TMJ.Another is model with objective function requiring a minimum sum of the tensions in the muscles. Then the muscles forces can be solved by linear programming method according to the changing of bite force.
