BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:Esophageal Carcinoma (EC) is one of the major malignancies worldwide and is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related death in China. Advances in modern biological techniques have contributed to discovery of its molecular mechanism, suggesting that EC is a genetic disease arising from the complex multi-step process and the progressive accumulation of multiple genetic alterations. The recent development of cDNA microarray technology provides a platform where one can explore the inner status of EC. The data obtained from the microarray analysis are expected to uncover the important genetic alterations underlying EC development and its clinical behavior. It is likely that cDNA microarray-based expression profiling will substantially facilitate the discovery of new diagnostic and prognostic indicators and biomarkers of therapeutic response, as well as the classification of pathological diagnosis, in EC. There are several...
