It is well known that premenopausal women have a lower risk than men at the same age of suffering cardiovascular disease. There are many potential benefits of estrogen on the cardiovacscular system, including improving lipid profile, vasodilatation, modulating cell adhesion molecule expression and influencing coagulation and anti-coagulation activity, et al. Clinical and experimental evidences have shown that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) might reduce the morbility and mortality of cardiovacscular disease in postmenopausal women. Therefore the supplements of different patterns of estrogen are very popular in postmenopausal women in order to prevent cardiovascular disease. However, some collections of clinical reports indicated that the long-term HRT might increase the incidence of breast and endometrial cancers by statistical studies, which limits the wide use of HRT. Recently, the attention has been drawn on the value of plant-originated phytoestrogen as potential replacement for estrogen, α -zearalanol (ZAL) , a new natural phytoestrogen found in many plants such as bean and corn, possesses estrogen-like property and facilitates plant growth and development. Dai S.L. et al have reported that ZAL is of estrogenic properties in the form of showing positive effects on prevention of experimental atherosclerosis to certain extent, as well as lessen some adverse effects on mammary and uterine glands, suggesting that ZAL might selectively target certain estrogen-related tissue, or possess some pharmacological properties different from 17 β -estradiol (E2). Such insight is encouraging for further study. The abnormality of coagulation state in vivo is very ctitical for thrombosis disease, so it is necessary to take research in this field. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of ZAL on coagulation, to explore the related mechanism involved and compare its effects with endogenous estrogen 17 β -estradiol, in order to generally estimate its...
