Background The first possible sites of metastasis along the route of lymphtic drainage from the primary lesion are known as sentinel lymph node (SLN). According to the SLN concept ,metastatic tumor cells will progress from the primary tumor in an orderly and sequential fashion, following the lymphtic channels into the most direct site of drainage. Detailed pathological examinations of SLN is helpful to predict the status of the regional lymph nodes. In 1977 Cabans proposed that SLN in patients with penile cancer could be removed by limited surgery and examined the nodal status of these SLNs to determine the indication for more lymphadenectomy. Morton applied the same concept to the managements of cutaneous using the introperative blue injection for localization of the SLN. The SLN concept was subsequently found to be applicable for solid neoplasms such as breast cancer, gastric cancer and prostatic cancer. Now introperative SLN mapping and biopsy(SLNB) has been used to patients with melanoma and breast cancer and was found to be a very accurate staging procedure.Rectal carcinoma is one of the most common tumor in China, both...
