Objective: To investigate the morphology, axial lines and the normal development of the sclera in human fetal eyes of different ages. To evaluate the existence and expression of matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2) and matrix metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9)and BFGF, TGFβ in the posterior sclera in different fetal ages by the way of immunohistochemistry and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9and BFGF, TGFβ of the posterior sclera in human fetus at the same age was determined by immunohistochemistry and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and the nature underlining the formation and heredity of myopia was clarified. Methods: Thirty human fetal eyes ranging in age from 12 to 28 pregnant weeks were carefully extracted within 2 hours of death. The vertical and horizontal lines were measured and the sclera around the posterior pole was carefully dissected, and the morphologic alternations were examined by light...
