BACKGROUND AND BOJECTIVE :With the pursuit of aesthetic and the improvement of life quality, more and more adult patients are looking for orthodontic treatment. Now, the general orthodontic technology including fixed appliance, asymmetry elastic et al was generally used in adult patients. Furthermore, asymmetry elastic method played an important role in correcting the discrepancy midline and adjusting the occlusion relationship in orthodontic clinic practice. However, there is currently a great lack of knowledge of the long-term effects of asymmetry elastic on adult patients, because the lower growth potential than adolescent patients and abrasion dentition. To reveal the effect of intermaxillary asymmetry elastic force on adult patients, we constructed the animal experiment model and focus on the remodeling of the condylar cartilage and subchondral bone in temporomandibular joint (TMJ).In TMJ, the condyle is the major structure, which included the condylar cartilage and subchondral bone. The condylar cartilage has responsibility for outside force-reaction because they are in frontal position. On the other hand, subchondral bone supports the condylar cartilage, which make up the bulk partition in TMJ. The subchondral bone can straightly absorb shocks by 30%. Therefore, it is important to reveal the effect of asymmetry elastic on adult patients from this two adjacent structure point.METHODS : Two hundred-twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were employed for the experiment and twelve as controls. The test group was...
