Understanding the nature of occlusal contacts is very important for dentistry. However, with restriction of the property of recording material and technique, in most studies evaluation for the occlusal contacts was qualitative observation. Comprehension of the characteristic of the occlusal contacts was insufficient to some extent. The computer-aided video analysis system promits quantitative analysis of the occlusal contacts. In this study, the occlusal contacts in a physiological or pathological state were recorded with silicone and assessed with the computer-aided video analysis system. The results and conclusions were as follows:The occlusal contacts was not pure mechanical contacts, but the integrated embodiment of the craniomandibular system, having its peculiar biological nature. Abnormality of one part of the craniomandibular system might relate to pathological change of occlusal contacts. With bite fore increasing, the interocclusal distance shortened and the number of the occlusal contacts increased. The type of occlusal contacts transformed from unstable under light pressure to stable under medium...
