BcakgroundHepatic diseases are significant to the health and living quality of human beings. Whatever the pathogeny is, these diseases will develop gradually, turn to hepatocirrhosis or fibrosis, and liver failure will be the final issue. Liver transplantation is as known one of the most important surgical means of saving the lives of patients suffering from otherwise fatal hepatic diseases. However, the donor shortage and the need for life-long immunosuppression, with its known side effects, are limitations of this therapy; a large number of patients lose their lives while waiting for grafts.Hybrid bioartificial liver system is one of the bridges between liver failure and transplantation, which is helpful for the regeneration of hepatocytes and reconstruction of liver function temporarily. A variety of hybrid bioartificial liver systems have already been applied in clinic after decades' research. Hepatocytes are the crucial component of the hybrid bioartificial liver systems, whose metabolic activity is the foundation of hybrid bioartificial liver systems. Therefore, how to gain...
