BACKGROUNDBone defect is a bone lost caused by trauma, sarcoma or infection. Damaged bone will spontaneously heal provided the defect is not over a critical limit, but when the defect is critical-sized, it will be filled by fibrous tissue because the osteoblast cells can not pass the gap between two broken bone. So a proper treatment, like bone transplant, is necessary. Bone defect patients take a very important part from orthopedics patients, there are about 10~15% orthopedics patients who need bone transplant at least. Every year, about 1,000,000 bone transplant operations have been done in US. China is a big country with most population, so it is no doubt that the number of bone defect patients is more big. With the rapid development of society and economy, more and more traffic accident happened in every year. It directly results in the number of bone defect patients increasing rapidly every year. Nowadays, bone defect has become one of the most important disease which threat people's living quality severely.Today, the most common methods used to healing bone defects include: Autogenous bone grafts and allogenic bone grafts. But autogenous bone grafts have a shortage on donor, difficult to make shape and will bring a complicate disease on donor site; allogenic bone grafts often follow with graft rejective reaction, and have a potential risk of propagation of many disease.
