To improve the bioactivity of pure titanium implants, and to avoid the disintegration of conventional hydroxyapatite coating on the surface of titanium implants, a functional gradient coating composed of 3 individual parts was designed and constructed on the surface of pure titanium. By combination of the advantages of HA, FHA and TiO2 coatings, the novel composite coating could overcome many of the disadvantages of these commonly used coatings in the implant dentistry. Sol-gel route was employed to construct the nano-sized coatings on the titanium surface, taking many of its advantages into consideration. In the design of the composite coating, TiO2 was used as the innermost layer because its chemical affinity to both titanium substrate and apatite ensures good adhesion. And its surface hydroxyl groups such as Ti-OH could promote hydroxyapatite formation and bone bonding. Besides, it is one of the best erosion preventer. The...
