Objective:1. To discuss the relation between osteoporosis and osteoarthritis; 2. To study the relation between the meniscus degeneration and ostoarthritis of knee joint; 3. To compare osteoporosis TCM syndromes with osteoarthr-itis TCM syndromes so as to offer the theoretical foundation for TCM prevention and treatment. 4. To provide donor selection scheme of homogeneity variant meniscus transplantation to approach early-stage intervention measure.Method:1. By statistics about osteoarthritis and osteoporosis TCM syndromes issued in public by TCM magazines from January of 1980 to March of 2007, the difference between osteoarthritis and osteoporosis are studied;2. Patients of knee joint osteoarthritis and osteoporosis chosen from hospitalized patients in the second affiliated hospital of Guangzhou university of Chinese Medicine are studied retrospectively to summarize the laws of TCM syndromes in order to afford theoretical foundation for TCM treatment;3. Knee joint MRI images of 303 cases of patients are collected from January of 2005 to February of 2007 in Guang Dong provincial hospital to measure the size of each portion of meniscus, tibial plateau and femoral condyle. The above mentioned cases are divided again into normal group and degeneration group according to suggestion of measurement, compared size changes of corresponding portion, incidence rate of circumferential shift and shift index, radius of cirvature of medial and lateral meniscus between two groups;4. In terms of data from specimen anatomy and Knee joint MR, MR scans the specimen of meniscus resection, and then images are reconstructed by MR, compared with true values to discuss donor selection option schemes. Result:1. Deficiency of liver and kidney, qi stagnation and blood stasis are common syndromes of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. Qi stagnation and blood stasis, deficiency of liver and kidney, blockage of dampness and heat, dampness refused into joints are basis TCM syndromes of knee joint osteoarthritis. Deficiency of Kidney yang, deficiency of kidney, qi stagnation and blood stasis, deficiency of liver and kidney, deficiency of spleen are basis TCM syndromes of osteoporosis.1. The average of onset age about osteoarthritis is 72 years old, and that of onset age about ostoporosis is 76.53 years old.2. Meniscus degeneration is correlated with osteoarthritis. Correlation coefficient of Pearson r is 0.877;3. Data of meniscus from MRI measure is in accordance with true value, Without significant difference.Conclusion:1. Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis have common pathophysiological basis. Osteoporosis is aggravated on the basis of pathological changes of osteoarthritis. The treatment of osteoarthritis can delay or relieve process of osteoporosis.2. Meniscus degeneration or injury is a key factor resulted in osteoarthritis. Therefore, prevention and treatment of meniscus degeneration can postpone process of osteoarthritis.3. There is no statistical difference between data of MRI reconstructed meniscus and true meniscus; So data of MRI reconstructed meniscus afford donor selection of meniscus replacement operation as for patients with meniscus defect.
