A large number of existing cases demonstrate that modern and contemporary art has given abundant experience and inspiration to art design through an employment of different resources, themes, perspectives, techniques, texts, styles, subjects and media. Vice versa, conceptual design, experimental design, avant-garde design, future design and even the so called hyper design and anti-design are also widely spread in modern art context, reflecting the compatibility of their innate characters and forms. Their intertwinement can be accounted for by the fact that modern and contemporary art is in line with art design in its philosophical, spiritual, critical and innovative dimensions. The characteristics of modern and contemporary art is similar to those of art design, so in some ways, modern and contemporary art is an subjective designing behavior.Initiated by Bauhaus, modern and contemporary art has played an important and inevitable role in foreign art design education and architecture education. Therefore, the utilization of its resources and subjects to inspire thinking, develop experimental and explorative attitudes and cultivate sense of form and interest is irreplaceable by other resources. At the same time, modern and contemporary art is frequently involved in curriculum provision, content of courses theory reading, textbook cases, subject design, assignments and bibliographical references, making it an indispensable and challenging part in teaching art design.Based on the understanding and analysis of modern and contemporary art, the research tries to discover subjects from it and then come up with a series of relative experiments and ideas. Firstly, the author analyzes and defines the selected objects by means of modem curriculum theories like element extraction, lateral selection, form games, logical components, pluralism and crossover, and accumulate useful materials into different curriculum. Secondly, the author studies successful teaching cases on modern and contemporary art and design. Thirdly, the typical pattern for the application of modern and contemporary art in design teaching and the effective teaching styles are concluded according to the author’s teaching practices and experiments.
