This dissertation focuses on the acceptance of Chinese literature by Vietnamese readers by studying the literary translation of the twentieth century Chinese literature into Vietnamese. The discussion of "twentieth century Chinese literature" used in this thesis refers to the various literary phenomena in the field of Chinese literature. However, not all existing Chinese literature translated and introduced in Vietnam will be discussed in this thesis.This dissertation is divided into four sections. The preface introduces the discussion of "twentieth century Chinese literature" in Vietnam, and provides an overview of its establishment and development in Vietnam as foreign literature. Chapters one to three discusses the chronological development of three periods of translation of twentieth Chinese literature in Vietnam.The first chapter introduces two waves of translation of Chinese literature that occurred in early twentieth century Vietnam with respect to the translated Xuzhenya novels, including the state of translation and materials associated with current translated works. Further in-depth analysis shows that the introduction of Xuzhenya novels in Vietnam reflects the perception of modern Vietnamese scholars on the "New Literature" of China. This perception was influenced by various literary and aesthetics that remained from the traditional reception of Chinese literature.Chapter two discusses the Vietnamese readership’s reception of Lu Xun’s literary works by examining the translation of Chinese literature in Vietnam from the1940s to1960s. Dang Thai Mai as a representative example for one form of reception where literature reflects ideology, Specifically, this perception entails Lu Xun’s literature, which serves as political ideology. In contrast, a different form of reception, represented by Phan Khoi, assessed the literary values of Lu Xun’s works from the standpoint of the intellectuals. In1958, Dang Thai Mai publically criticized and defied the reception of Lu Xun’s literature by Phan Khoi. This marked the reception of Lu Xun literary works and had reached to the point where "literature was idealized", and at the same time, reflected a general literary development from the "New Literature" to "Modern Literature."Chapter three focuses on "positioning literature" to discuss the translation of Chinese literature in Vietnam from the1990s to the present. The concept of "positioning literature" was reflected in four levels:(i) positioning literary history for literary phenomena translated and introduced in the1940s to1960s;(ii) for literary phenomena that emerged after1980s, the traditional translator relied on the dynamics of literary development at the national level to develop criteria to evaluate the value of a literary work;(iii) modern media and cultural view influence modern translators, which results in the popularity of authors or works used as a criterion for evaluation;(iv) from the perspective of the readers, their notion of "positioning literature" requires access to the authors of popular Chinese literary works. Chapter3selects the translation of Mac Ngon fictions in Vietnamese as a representative example. Mac Ngon novels not only attracts translators with different perspectives, but also are favored by general readers. The translation of Mac Ngon fictions is believed to originate from the concept of "positioning mass culture." Therefore, after the1990s, positioning mass culture is the major trend in the reception of Chinese literature in Vietnam.In conclusion, the above discussion outlines that the various styles of reception of Vietnamese readership towards the twentieth century Chinese literature not only reflects the development of Chinese literature in the twentieth century in Vietnam, but also the Vietnamese literature through different periods with different concepts of reception of Chinese literature. These concepts are affected by two major factors:first is the foreign relationship between the two countries, and second, the historical practice of analysis of Chinese literature by Vietnamese readers.Given the close relationship between these two countries, the reception of Chinese literature in Vietnam is relatively similar to the development of the existing Chinese literary system. However, reception of Chinese literature in Vietnam differs from traditional reception.
