In the background of Chinese social and cultural transformation, the inheritance of the national culture is given more and more concern and attention. The documentary has the characteristic, advantage and value of bearing and disseminating the national culture, so we here discuss how to promote the inheritance of the national culture through the documentary creation, which becomes the research topic with era significance. The thesis analyzes and investigates the creative features of Chinese documentaries in different stages of the new period by reviewing the development history, and elaborates the performance characteristics of the main aspects of the national culture in the documentary,and points out the problems and deficiencies, and finally puts forward the strategy of inheriting national culture though the documentary. The thesis uses the case analysis method, comparative research method, and draws lessons from the theory research results from cultural anthropology, communication studies, art studies and other subjects to analyze and discuss the problem.The thesis has eight major sections, including the introduction, six chapters of mutual association and the conclusion.The introduction part defines the main core concept and the research object, and illustrates the origin and significance of the research, narrating and commenting on the research in the history and present situation, and points out the study methods as well as the innovation value.The first chapter mainly discusses the relationship between the documentary and the national culture. The documentary has the distinct feature and advantage of bearing and spreading the national culture, and in turn the national culture serves to improve the quality of the documentary and makes it more acceptable. It is pointed out that the documentary and the national culture share a close tie where they are mutually embedded and promoted. On this basis, the thesis analyzes the value of the documentary on inheriting the national culture, and clarifies that the documentary contributes to mining, displaying the resources of the national culture and participating in the construction of diversified pattern of the human culture.The second chapter analyzes the conditions of the heritage of the national culture though the documentary in each stages of the new period, and discusses the creative features, the technique and the style of the documentaries, pointing out the reasons and making assessment. The last part of this chapter analyzes and compares the diachronic evolution of the documentaries in the three stages, and clarifies the main factors which influence the documentary inheriting the national culture in different stages, and compares and explores the phenomenon called the “National Culture Heat” in the field of the documentaries in the 1980 s and the new century.The third chapter mainly studies the performance features of the national culture in the documentaries in the new period, including the basic idea, ethical connotation, and aesthetic taste, then judges and evaluates them according to the effect that they promote the heritage of the national culture, and make it clear what is worth advocating and developing, and what needs to prevent and avoid by combining the features and laws of the development of the human culture and the documentary creation, and points out that the national culture should be correctly viewed, adjusted and transformed in order to be mutually integrated with the outstanding composition of the other cultures, so that Chinese documentary can obtain good survival and development in the modern cultural context.The fourth chapter mainly discusses the problems existing in the documentary creation in the new period of China and their root causes, and analyzes the attitude and position of the creators, cultural awareness, and entertainment demands. The root causes of these problems in general can be divided into internal and external causes. The cultural competence and creative ability of the creator are the internal cause, and the market economy and the mass culture are the external cause. These factors more or less restrict and limit the impact of the documentaries on the bearing and spreading of the national culture.The fifth chapter studies the strategy of the heritage of the national culture through the documentary, and points out the basic quality that the creator should have and the creation principle and the method. The creators should perfect and improve their cultural quality, including increasing free and conscious cultural awareness, building the rational spirit of identifying the culture quality, expanding macro vision of the culture and strengthening the communication concept of facing the audience and the market. The principles of documentary production include the principle of cultural ecology as the core, the principle of combining static state with dynamic state, and the principle of combining the concrete with the abstract. In order to enhance the effect of the heritage of the national culture through the documentary, the creators should reasonably choose and imply the methods of documentary production, and pay attention to exploring and digging the cultural phenomenon, enhancing image expression, reasonably using storytelling tactics and exploiting the advantages of the presenters.The sixth chapter analyzes and studies the typical cases, which are selected from different stages in the new period,and represent the forms of the mainstream culture, elite culture, and mass culture. Through the analysis and research on the three documentaries with typical features of the time phase and form, and the comprehensive investigation and analysis of the internal and external factors influencing the documentary, we can grasp the creation background, idea, technique and characteristic of each work,and have further understanding of the uniqueness of the documentaries in each stage, and verify the universal law of the inheritance of the national culture through the documentary.The conclusion part points out the significance of strengthening the heritage of the national culture through the documentary in view of the development status of the current social culture and Chinese documentary. The analysis and discussion of the relevant problems need to be expanded and deepened.
