"Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty" is a historical romance widelycirculating in the Mongolian and the Han nationalities. It tells that Vassal King Li Xian and Prince Li Dan, assisted by the hero Xue Gang, defeated the plot of Wu Zetian andrestored the rule of Li Clan in the Tang Dynasty. There are some Chinese versions of Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty. In Mongolian areas, as the representative work, itwas sung by Hurqi, the singer of Hurin Ulger. Hurin Ulger is the traditional form of Mongolian storytelling. Renowned Hurqi Erdon Jiru and Burin Bayar’s singing has been recorded (respectively 67 chapters and 42 chapters). This dissertation compares the Mongolian Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty (Hurin Ulger) with The Romance of Southern Tang Dynasty of Chinese version (engraved in the year of Daoguang Bingwu, National Library’s Collections) and probes into the similarities and differences of the same story in the Mongolian and Han nationalities. The dissertation consists of three sections:introduction, body and Conclusion. The introduction section deals with the previous survey of the topic and the main concern, the purpose, the methodology and the significance of the present research.Body section is composed of three chapters.Chapter one deals with the plot of Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty (Hurin Ulger). It discusses its adaptation, the shift of structure and narration from Chinese version.Hurqi Erdon Jiruhe deleted 29 chapters from Chinese version. He recreated the story into seventy-one chapters with fifty-five-minute recording per chapter. His text deleted many irrelevant, pornographic and mysterious plots. His adaptation enriches the language of original version, makes the structure more reasonable and the story more logical and persuasive.Chapter Two analyzes the main characters of Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty (Hurin Ulger) and discusses the differences and characteristics of the two texts.Chinese story is characteristic of Male Chauvinism and Supreme Emperorship. It avoids depicting the silliness of the emperor and describes Wu Zetian as an immoral and cruel woman who usurped the throne. As for Xue Gang, his image gives the basic clue of the story. On the contrary, Hurqi Erdbn Jiruhe attaches importance to the hero—Xue Gang and put Emperor and Wu Zetian in the second place. It can be seen that Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty (Hurin Ulger) is a heroic story of Xue Gang from a family childe to a miserable hero to a general who saved the Tang Dynasty. In this version the Emperor is described as a self-indulgent ruler and Wu Zetian is not a totally negative image. Hurqi Erdon Jiruhe employs gradual and contrast techniques to shape his characters. For instance, he uses the images of treacherous ministers Zhang Tianzuo and Zhang Tianyou to set off the hero Xue Gang who tends to defend the weak against the strong.Chapter Three conducts the research on formulaic language. It analyzes thefeatures and ideological content of the formulaic language in Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty (Hurin Ulger). This chapter compares the formulaic language between Hurqi Erdon Jiru and Burin Bayar and concludes that the former’s application of formulaic language is more reasonable. Therefore, the formulaic language has played a more important role to the plot of the story in Erdon Jiru’s singing. The formulaic language in Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty (Hurin Ulger) is mainly composed of opening speech, the emperor’s going to the court, descriptions of the nature ect. According to a preliminary statistics,206 different words are used in Hurqi Erdon Jiru’s singsing. They are categorized into four types; philosophicaldictions, indoctrinating dictions, blameful dictions and descriptive dictions. They not only rationalize the content of the story but also enrich its language and reflect the Hurqi’s large vocabulary, expectation and ideological level. While singing, Hurqi also conveys the ideas of benevolence, loyalty, courtesy, wisdom and trust to his audiences. The conclusion summarizes the major points of the thesis. By comparing the Chinese and Mongolian versions of Xue Gang’s Rebellion Against Tang Danasty from three aspects, the author analyzes the singing style and artistic feature of Hurqi Erdon Jiruhe. The author believes that a successful recreation of the text of Hurin Ulger is closely related to Hurqi’s talent, vocabulary, scope of knowledge and logical thinking and the Chinese version is only the references.
