Low-carbon development model is not only the objective requirements of environmental protection and sustainable development, but also the path to achieve high efficiency, high quality and harmonious development between human and nature. The economy in Chinese rural areas remains a long-term growth, but also paid a heavy environmental price. In order to change the traditional model of development at the expense of the environment. The development mode that is characterized by low carbon and high efficient is becoming a low-carbon future direction of rural development. The integration of theory and practice of rural development, low-carbon economic theory, ecological compensation theory, the theory of circular economy in rural areas, rural planning theory and the research related to carbon emissions. Based on records of practical experience of low-carbon rural development at home and abroad, using the multidisciplinary method, complementary micro and macro research, qualitative and quantitative research method to support each other will be a plus in this area of study. Finally, building the theoretical system of Chinese low-carbon rural development through mathematical model building and analysis tools for a large number of practical information and statistical data analysis. Analyzing the energy consumption and structure, structural carbon emissions in Chinese rural areas over a period of time to get definite conclusions. The main results are as follows:Firstly, establishing Chinese low-carbon rural theory which includes the concept and connotation extension of low-carbon rural areas, methods of classifying low-carbon rural development stage, low-carbon model of rural development, carbon emissions index system of China, low-carbon awareness of residents. The use of the above theory and methods enables analysis of data which were collected from practice.Secondly, the research data which were collected from28rural areas of eastern China, southwest China, southern China, northwest and northern China were analyzed. Based on low-carbon rural area development division method was used to analyze these villages. And the summary of the study which is valuable for low-carbon development was documented.Thirdly, based on carbon emissions index system of China it is important to learn from urban and industrial carbon emissions accounting methods to establish carbon emissions accounting methods which fit the characteristics of Chinese rural areas. At the national level accounting carbon emissions statistical data in1999-2012was used to analyze the structure and factors affecting emissions of carbon emissions in Chinese rural areas.Fourthly, development of China’s low-carbon villages from multi-dimensional perspective. Issue one is the calculation of energy consumption in rural China (1999-2010) volume and structure as a basis for the developmental process of China’s low-carbon rural energy strategy was discussed. It was concluded based on the findings from this study. Issue two, according to industrial structure and change trend in rural areas of China, the relationship between rural industrial structure and low-carbon rural was analyzed. Industrial upgrading strategy in low-carbon rural development is proposed. Issue three, based on the account of livelihoods capital of three villages explored the impact of the livelihoods capital structure on carbon emissions and rural economic development in process of country low-carbon. Issue four, summed up the experiences and lessons of China’s urbanization, from this perspective, the low-carbon urbanization path in rural development constraints was analyzed. Finally, to conclude the basis of this study, policy options for China’s low-carbon rural development should be explored, specifically that of economic growth policy in low-carbon development, the country social development policies, ecological and environmental protection policies, and to raise awareness of low-carbon policies.
