Patentometrics On Communications Industry Technology Development

With the continuously strengthening of technology permeability and the accelerating of technological progress, science and technology have become the driving force to realize the innovation driven development and act a significant role in the transformation of industrial structure. With the constant improvement of patent database and the increasingly development of patent analysis tools and methods, the research of technology development are gradually returning to technology itself, especially in the field of emerging technologies, such as communication. The competitive advantage in the future is more and more attached to the technical standards and intellectual property rights in these industries. How can we grasp the line of technical development and further analyze the driving force and its dynamic mechanism of the industrial technology development from the perspective of patent analysis is very important.On account of this, this paper starting from the basic idea of Kuhn’s scientific paradigm theory, and under the framework of technology paradigm and technology applications we define the meaning of technology paradigm and technology applications. And based on technology paradigm theory we build the communication industry analysis framework from the perspective of patent analysis. Patent technology content and standard embodies technology paradigm, and patent technology application represent technology applications. Based on text mining technology, natural language processing technology and patenometrics analysis methods, we can go one step further to the level of patent content analysis. Taking the technical term extracted from patent content as basic unit, we analyze patent technology content, standard and application of communication industry. Analyze the role that leading firms of communication industry have been acted during the formation of technology paradigm and its applications. And characteristics and commonness of these leading firms during each technology paradigm shift have also been explored. Mainly finished the following work:Firstly, we analyze development and cyclical changes of two aspects that embodied the technology paradigm, patent technology content and standards of communication industry. According the similarity of technical terms, we divide technology content into five periods of time,1990-1992,1993-1998,1999-2003,2004-2008and2009-2013. In each phase, principles, rules, ways and methods that patents based have a major change. And then compare patent technology standard content with patent technology content we find that, to some extent, the standard realize the convergence of diversity of technology content and limit the framework for the subsequent development of patent technology application. At the same time, the leading technology in the previous cycle provides the technical basis for the standardization. And the leading technology transform into dominant design through standardization. Patent technology content and standard reflects the whole process of technology paradigm formation.Secondly, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model is introduced to industrial patent analysis. Through LDA model, this paper divides the communication industry patent technology application into14subjects. And through cosine similarity algorithm, the similarity of patent technology application between any two years has been calculated. Based on the similarity, development cycles of patent technology application of communication industry have been divided. Through the comparative analysis between patent technology application development cycle and patent technology content development cycle, we find that the change and development of technology paradigm leads to the discontinuity and continuity of the corresponding patent technology application development. The development of patent technology application is the result of its technology paradigm development. And at the same time, patent technology application is the cause of the technology paradigm change. The application of patent technology verifies and challenges the development of technology paradigmFinally, we establish an assessment indicator system and16patent leading firms of communication industry have been selected. We find that during each industry technology paradigm shift, the competitive landscape of leading firms changed dramatically. After the analysis of leading firms’ patent content, standard patent and patent application, a compression between industry patent content, standard and application and firms’ in each year have been carried out. We find that the patent content of leading firms is ahead of the same period’s industry dominant technology, which provide an important technical basis for the formation of new technological paradigm. And most of the leading firms account for a large number of works during standardization and some of them have a large number of standard patents. To some extent leading firms transform its leading technology into dominant design while they participate in the standardization process. And in technology application the role played by leading firms is that they first get a breakthrough and apply the technical principle into practice and act as model demonstration for other firms’ technology practice.
