On the basis of study on organic petrology, geology, geochemistry and experiment on the thermal simulation, the paper discusses the characteristics of coal measures and coal-formed gas, concludes the formation conditions of large gas fields, and points out the main potential regions in Kuche depression. The Jurrasic coal is widely distributed in Kuche depression. The vitrinite content is relative higher, about 33~96%, inertinite content is high too, about 27% and exinite content is very low. So the abundant vitrinite is the main parent material of natural gas. There are six sets of hydrocarbon source rocks, that is, Qiakemake formation, Kezileru'er formation, Yangxia formation, Taliqike formation, Huangshanjie formation, Kelamayi formation. Among them, the Kezileru'er formation, Yangxia formation and Taliqike formation are good-medium source rocks, Huangshanjie formation and Qiakemake formation are moderate source rocks, and Kelamayi formation is moderate-poor source rocks. Jurassic formation is mainly the coal measures of swamp facies and Triassic formation is mainly the mudstone of lake facies. Based on the thermal simulation of coal, carbonaceous mudstone and the main macerals of coal, we can conclude that the carbonaceous mudstone and coal can produce hydrocarbon. The exinite have the strongest ability of hydrocarbon-producing, and the inertinite can produce gas and not form oil. The natural gas in Ke-Yi tectonic belt is from coal measures. There are two kinds of oil: one is mainly from Jurassic coal measures, the other is mainly from Triassic mudstone. The main formation factors of large gas fields in Kuche depression are abundant gas source, region capping bed, traps above or between abnormally pressured seal-bounded compartments, late pool-forming period and effective fracture. The Kelasu tectonic belt, Yiqikelike tectonic belt and Luntai arch are good exploration areas in Kuche depression.
