Illumination optics had made great progress in the past fifty years, along with new technologies and applications such as photolithography, backlighting and projection display etc. But the basic issue behind these technologies and applications is how effectively to get a predefined illuminating distribution. Especially in projection display, each kind of the display chips has 4:3 or 16:9 rectanglular size. So the essential problem should be solved turns to how to effectively get a uniformly rectangular illumination facula.Different with imaging optics, illumination optics belongs to nonimaging optics. Thus in this dissertation, the essential problem of projection illumination field will be be answered in a viewpoint of nonimaging concepts, concluded the rules and given the new orientation to meet the development of projector. In the disstertaion, the concepts and evolution of nonimaging optics theory are given firstly. Then two elementary methods for uniformity, "superposition" and "tailoring", were concluded after deeply analyzed various nonimaging devices. As we known, "superposition" had been the primary method in current projection illumination system design: space superposition in LCD projection system and angular superposition in DLP projection system.Tandem fly's eyes system is the most representative device in "superposition" devices. In order to deeply study the characteristic lamp's lumens-etendue model should been established firstly, which shows that short arc length lead to high lumens output within same etendue. Then, fly's eye's etendue model is given by which the transfer ability of energy and etendue between fly's eye and lamp, fly's eye and display chip has been elucidated well. The fly's eye lluminating distribution and discrete fashion is reported according to fly's eye's lumens-etendue model. It is testified that there is an optimum value to balance the performance and manufacture. Next, the relation between discrete pupils of fly's eyes system and projection lens MTF is researched. It shows the projection lens MTF value is underestimated while using current optical design program such as Zemax. At last a detail design of highbrightness three panels LCD projector is presented. The power efficiency is about 17% and the output is 3190 ANSI lumens. System contrast is about 350 and uniformity is above 93%.In order to meet the miniaturization trend of projection display, a novel reflective fly's eye illumination system is designed according to "space superposition" concept. The design method and some discussion are given in the third parts of dissertation. The simulation results show the system size will be greatly reduced while optical performance maintained."Tailor" method is a new way to design projection illumination system. In the lasp parts of dissertation, the pricinple and algorithm of 3D tailored freeform reflector design is detail studied. And the simulation results show the tailored reflector gives excellent performance. At last, a summary of this paper is included and the prospect is given together.
