In this thesis, the propagation of liquid surface waves in structures are studied both experimentally and theoretically. This thesis consists of seven chapters.In the first chapter, the backgrounds of liquid surface waves propagating in periodic structures are introduced, including wave power, tsunami, recent progresses and our previous research works.In the second chapter, basic theories for liquid surface waves are briefly discussed. Several theoretical methods are introduced to study the propagation of liquid surface waves in periodic structures, including transfer matrix method, multiple scattering method, plane wave method and finite element method. Based on these methods, band structures, transmission and field distributions can be calculated.In the third chapter, the experimental methods of qualitative observation and quantitative measurement and the experimental setup are introduced.In the fourth chapter, chaos in water waves is studied. With a double slit experiment, we find that the interference fringes disappear from the screen and the intensity obeys the addition rule after averaging if the source is placed in a billiard whose classical ray dynamics is chaotic.In the fifth chapter, the focusing of a plane wave in the 2D cylinder arrays is studied experimentally and theoretically. This design could be used to increase the harvest efficiency of wave power.In the sixth chapter, transformation optics is discussed, including perfect cloaking and rotation cloaking. Latest experiments are also introduced. Results of rotating cloaking and our experiment in liquid surface waves are presented.In the seventh chapter, further study of liquid surface waves is discussed, including improvements of experimental setups and new phenomena that could be realized in water waves.
