This work is on the study of theories of polymer solutions and experimental measurements of vapor-liquid equilibria for polymer solutions. It contains the following parts:1. A differential Pressure apparatus was established for the measurements of vapor-liquid equilibria(VLE) for polymer-solvent solutions. Pure ethanol and polystyrene-toluene solution were used for the test of the apparatus. Fourteen sets of VLE data were measured in a temperature range from 303.15-333.15K for the binary systems: Polystyrene + ethyl acetate, Polystyrene + m-xylene, Polystyrene + cyclohexanone, Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC) + cyclohexanone, PVC + 2-butanone, Ploy(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) + chloroform, PMMA + cyclohexanone, Poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG) + water and PEG+ chloroform. The simplified hole theory equation of state proposed by this group was used to correlate accurately the data measured.2. Based on the perturbation theory, the Perturbed Square Well Chain Equation of State (PSWC EOS) for chain like liquid system has been developed. The PSWC EOS consist of two terms: (1) The hard-sphere chain EOS proposed by Chiew(1990). (2) The square-well coordination number model proposed by this group(Guo, Wang and Lu, 1990), which represents interactions between chain molecules. In this work, the PSWC EOS has been applied to an accurate description of pressure-volume-temperature relationship for 67 polymers liquid and 37 normal fluids, including normal alkanes, branched and cyclic alkanes, aromatics, ketones and halogenated hydrocarbon. The analytical expressions for vapor-liquid equilibria(VLE) and liquid-liquid equilibria(LLE) calculations have been derived. The experimental solvent activity coefficients for 44 data sets of polymer solutions have been correlated.
