Solar building plays an important role in reducing energy consumption and emissions of the society . W ith the enrichment of the concept o f sustainab ility and th e ever-changing life styles, solar residential bu ilding should be able to cope with the new social, econom ic and technological challenges. The'Solar Decathlon (SD)'international competitions, which h ave been he ld in the U.S. since 20 02 and hav e taken place in Europe from 2010, have proposed theoretical, technological, functional and aesthetic solutions to the challenges. Through a review of the participants, the evaluation criteria, the s trategies of the entrie s of the past S D competitions, and the innovations and tendencies of solar buildin gs are analyzed. The entry of T ianjin University in the 2010 SD competition, namely the'Sunflower'solar house prototype is presented in detail, which explored the integrated solar building designing methods and appropriate, efficiency technical solutions. Finally, LCA and LCC approaches are applied to analyze the resource and ener gy consumption, the environm ental impact and cost of the Sunflower prototype. The result is compared with another SDE project and a common single family house to assess the advantage and limits of the prototype.
