Most of plants of genus Polygonum, belong to family Polygonaceae, are perennial herbs including about 300 species, distributed in the north temperate zone. There are 131 species and 31 varieties growing in China, most of which are found to be of significant biological values for their cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects. Of them, Polygonum aubertii Henry is well known as scandent shrub and nectariferous plant. Its rhizomes and stems are used in traditional herbal medicine for the treatment of pulmonary disease, cat fever and rheumatoid arthritis, and improve acuity of vision.Plants of genus Homalomena are perennial herbs, which are widely distributed throughout tropical Asian and American. Three species of genus Homalomena occur in China. Of them, the rhizomes of Qian-Nian-Jian have been used as the Traditional Chinese Medicine for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, strengthening the tendons and, bones, and invigoration of the kidney and liver. This thesis describes the phytochemical investigation of the aerial parts of P. aubertii collected in the city of Lanzhou and the rhizomes of H. occulta grew in Guangxi province.106 compounds were isolated by means of column chromatography (CC), preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC), and recrystallization etc. In combination with the spectroscopic data from literature, the structures of 97 compounds have been elucidated on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic methods, including IR, UV, EI-MS, ESI-MS, HR-ESI-MS, and 1D/2D NMR experiments. Eighteen of them were new natural compounds, ten were new converted products. Among them,32 compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of P. aubertii, and 31 compounds (including 2 new natural compounds and 6 new converted products) of them were elucidated. Their structures were determined as flavonoids, chromone, triterpenoids, etc.2-alkylated chromone and chromanone could be pointed out as taxonomic markers for woody plant P. aubertii.74 compounds were isolated and elucidated 66 of them from the rhizomes of H. occulta, including 16 new natural compounds and 4 new converted products. Their structures were determined as sesquiterpenoids, triterpenoids, steroids, alkaloids, carboxylic acids, etc.More and more aromadendrane sesquiterpenoids were isolated and synthesized. Herein, the promising results stimulated us to give a review from phytochemical views. The results of this thesis will be supplement for the research on phytochemistry, the relationship of structure and activity, biological activity, chemotaxonomy and screening new medicines. Moreover, they are meaningful in providing scientific evidence to further development and utilization of Traditional Chinese Medicine resources, especially in special environments, and realization of modernization of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
