Academic Thoughts And Clinical Experience Of Professor Shen Feng-ge

Professor SHEN Feng-ge, a well known TCM expert in febrile diseases, has created diversity academic thoughts. This study was designed to systematically analyze both documents and clinical experiences of professor SHEN for better inheritance and development of his academic thoughts.In this paper, books and essays written by professor SHEN, or papers related to his academic thoughts written by his students were reviewed. The result showed that professor SHEN's academic thoughts can be categorized as six types:1. Theory of febrile disease is developed on the basis of Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases. Professor SHEN pointed out that the development of six meridians is the basis of the specific syndrome differentiation theory related to febrile disease; thoughts of seeking pathology and choosing treatments by syndrome differentiation have promoted the treatment of febrile diseases.2. Effects of Guizhi in Ramuli Cinnamomi Decoction recorded in Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases are profound, including relieving exterior to regulate ying, activating yang to dispel cold, resolving fluid retention, tonifying deficiency and suppressing the adverse, etc. Its functions can be even more complicated when it's combined with other herbs.3. Syndrome differentiation of water metabolism abnormality diseases recorded in Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases can be categorized as five types:for syndrome of exterior cold and interior fluid retention, the therapeutic principle should be relieving exterior and resolving fluid; for accumulation of fluid in the chest, reducing edema by hydragogue is proper; for accumulation of fluid in the middle jiao, warming yang to resolve fluid retention should be adopted; for dysfunction of yang qi in the lower jiao, activating qi to resolve fluid retention can be effective; for combination of stagnated heat and dampness, clearing heat and dissipating dampness should be applied.4. Etiology of febrile diseases has tendency to combine with dampness, and the conventional six evils and climate factors should be enriched from aspects of modern science of microorganism microbial pathogens.5. Nourishing Yin is a very important guidance in the treatment of febrile diseases caused by exogenous factors. Professor SHEN summarized ancient literatures of febrile diseases into six key points:prevent diseases from the health and expel disease from the sick; balance healthy energy strengthening and evils expelling; adjust treatment according to seasonal conditions; circumstances and individual condition; keep a balance of promotion and demotion.6. Creation of a unified theoretical system of exogenous fever syndromes, in which he raised that six meridians differentiation, Wei-Qi-Ying-Xue differentiation and triple jiao differentiation share the same basis of fundamental pathology, and suggested to combine the Zangfu differentiation with syndrome-differentiation by eight principles and Qixue as a whole.According to the observation of professor SHEN's clinical work and memory of his instructions, his experience in treating six kinds of disease including common cold in infants, bronchial asthma, atrophic gastritis, Behcet's disease, heat-damp Bi syndrome, menopausal syndrome, were summarized; the specific application of Zhisou San and the use of Huo Pu Xia Ling decoction in internal diseases were also analyzed. Professor SHEN's experience on treating coma or delirium in febrile disease and the prescription of paste were analyzed too.
