Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz., a medicinal plant of Araliaceae, is distributed in most areas of China. The roots and stem bark of this plant are used as Traditional Chinese Medicine in Chinese folklore. Pharmacological investigation shows this plant has antitumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic, anti-diabetes and anti-fungus activities. To search for pharmacological chemical constituents, and elucidate the substantial basis of pharmacological mechanism, we have systematically investigated the chemical constituents of ethanol extract from Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz.. As a result, 25 compounds are obtained with common chromatography, semi-preparative HPLC, recrystallization and PTLC. Structures of 20 compounds are determined under data analysis of UV,IR,MS,1D and 2D-NMR. Compounds 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11-16 and 19-20 are obtained from this plant for the first time.Antitumor activity of saponins from this plant has been tested by MTT method. The result shows that kalopanaxsaponin A has inhibitory effects on many tumor cell lines. At the same time, kalopanaxsaponin A indicates anti-fungus activity. Hederagenin-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester shows significant inhibitory effect on gastric cancer 809 cell lines.The roots and stem bark of Ampelopsis sinica var.hancei (pl.) W. T. Wang, called"Duzhenggang"in Chinese folklore, are used to treat osteomyelitis. Most plants of the Ampelopsis genus, are used as herbal drugs with antitumor, antibacterial, antivirus, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immune enhancement, decreasing blood fat, sugar and pressure and protecting liver activities. There is little literature on chemical constituents from Ampelopsis sinica var.hancei (pl.) W. T. Wang. To search for pharmacological chemical constituents, elucidate the substantial basis of pharmacological action, and develop the plant resources, we have investigated the chemical constituents of ethanol extract from this plant. And 7 compounds are obtained with common chromatography, recrystallization and PTLC. The structures of 6 compounds are determined under data analysis of UV,1D and 2D-NMR. All compounds are obtained from this plant for the first time.
