We studied the effect of Ba-Wei-Wan(八味丸) on rat models with Syndrome of insulin resistance(IRS) which were induced by high-fat-sugar-salt diet and on patients of IRS respectively. IGT and hyperglycemia, the high level of plasma TG, IC, insulin and LPO, and the lower level of plasma HDL-c, were ameliorated significantly by administration of Ba-Wei-Wan for 28 days in both animal models and patients. In addition, muscle TG accumulation, the resistance to insulin(in the insulin tolerance test) and the increased level of LPO in liver were reduced in rat models. The symptoms of patients were remarkably ameliorated by treatment with Ba-Wei-Wan. The experiment on animal models showed that the offects of Ba-Wei-Wan were better than those of Ba-Wei-Wan without Radix actomti Praeparata and Cortex Cinnamom and those of Capoprial combined with Metformin The cLinic investigation showed the effect of Ba-Wei-Wan adding Capoprial and Metformin were better than those of Capoprial combined with Metformin simply. The results suggested that Ba- We i-Wan ameliorated LOT, hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia and hypertension mainly due to the reduction of insulin resistance. The better effect Ba-Wei-Wan on ninny disorders was considered to be partly exhibited through a significant decrease in serum and liver LPO.
