Slow transit constipation (STC) in colon is the typical type in functional constipations, but the knowledge on its accession mechanism, pathogenic factor in traditional Chinese medicine, symptomatology characteristics and standard diagnosis & therapy is still insufficient. As a result, we carried out the following clinic and relevant experimental researches. The major pathogenesis for slow transit constipation in colon has been proven as the deficient spleen, weak vital energy and lacking strength in the intestine peristalsis after the traditional Chinese Medical symptomatology researches on the relevant symptoms of STC patients by complying with the principle in traditional Chinese medicine of "examining the case and seeking for the etiologic factor, examining the etiologic factor and undertaking the treatment" with the direction from the tutors and therefore, the fundamental therapeutic method for supplementing the vital energy, invigorating the spleen and strengthening the intestine peristalsis has been set up so as to treat the patients with the traditional Chinese medicine bighead atractylodes thizome on the basis of clinic experience. In the clinic researches, the STC patients were treated with bighead atractylodes thizome, and in the comparison with the curative effects of Cisapride, it has been shown in the comparative therapeutic observations that bighead atractylodes thizome can significantly reduce the defecation interval, defecation time and enhance the ejection rate in the colon conveyance experiments with the total effective rate obviously greater than that of comparative groups as well as stable and lasting effective effects. What's more, the NO level of blood serum can also be remarkably lowered after the treatment with bighead atractylodes thizome. This study has disclosed the clinic curative effects and partial action mechanism of bighead atractylodes thizome with respects to accession mechanism, symptomatology in traditional Chinese medicine, animal experiment and clinic observations on curative effects from various angles and different depths so that the base for development of traditional Chinese medicine for promotion on intestine peristalsis has been further established.
