| Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has a strong hereditary component and is affected by various chronic, systemic, lifelong endocrine diseases. DM mortality rates are close to those of cardiovascular disease and neoplasia, its complications affect all the organs of the entire body and it is a serious threat to the health and life of humanity. Modern medicine's treatment efficacy of DM is extremely limited. Chinese medicine's treatment of DM refers mainly to ancient doctors' experience treating "dispersion-thirst disease" (xiao ke bing), with the modern debate having evolved through the understandings that "dispersion-thirst disease is DM," "dispersion-thirst disease includes DM," and now "dispersion-thirst disease is not DM;" this has resulted in changes in what herbs and treatments are used to treat DM. This dissertation contains four main topics: it analyses the use of herbs and formulas used to treat DM, combs through the historical progression in which treatment changed from treating dispersion-thirst disease to treating DM, explores the differences between dispersion-thirst disease and DM, and proposes its own perspective on Chinese medicine's treatment of DM..The first part is "the retrospection of the treatment of dispersion-thirst disease and diabetes mellitus". Retrospect the treatment of dispersion-thirst disease and DM separately. Collected the prescriptions of the two disease, discusses the differences and similarities between DM and dispersion-thirst disease based on the differences in the formulas and herbs (including the treatment action of commonly used herbs, their flavor and Channel they enter) used to treat the two diseases.
