The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QL) of the elderly population. Data were recruited from the project P22 for "Policy Research for the Elderly". The project was conducted by the China Research Center on Aging (CRAC) in 1992. The survey was an empirical, stratified and cluster sampling survey. Total 95 surveying units were seclcted from the 12 provinces surveyed, with 48 distributed among cities and 47 among counties. All together we had 20441 valid questionares, with 9,889 done by men, 10,552 done by women. The questions were focus on to understand the economic support and daily cares for elderly in order to observe the ralationship among the elderly individuals, family, community and the state in the economic lives of the elderly. To achive this, efforts should also be made to understand the multifarious sicial features and medical and health care of the aged population.In the research on the life quality among the elderly, multi-layer evaluation system should be set up, it includes elderly person, family, living condition, social security, it wholly reflects the elderly material and mental living conditions.In the collecting of the elderly life quality index, the research jointing the China reality concerns difference between the developed countries and undeveloped countries. It pays more attention to the studies of objective index, and emphasizes the importance of objective index in the evaluation system.In the research method on the elderly life index, dividing the life quality into multi-layers, and using the function losing percent express the damaged level of the life quality, the more scores, the worse life quality. Using layer analytic method calculates the scores weighted using comprehensive score method calculated the comprehensive scores of the elderly life quality, and using the score describes and analysis the comprehensive condition of the Chinese elderly living condition and unbalance developing conditions among the local areas or between cities and countries.
