OBJECTIVE To establish a transplantable vx-2 tumor model in rabbit bladder.METHODS 24 New Zealand white rabbits were randomly subgrouped into control group and experimental group equally. Two different methods were used to establish the tumor model: method 1 for control group, vx-2 tumor mass was embedded under New Zealand white rabbit bladder mucosa exposed after bladder muscle incisure; method 2 for experimental group, after incisure of the bladder wall, the bladder mucosa was swelled by injection of normal saline under the mucosa, then vx-2 tumor mass was embedded under the mucosa through a 2mm incision in the swelled mucosa. Ultrasonography was performed 1, 2, 3, 4 weeks postoperatively to record the maximum tumor diameter, and the mean maximum tumor diameter of each group was then caculated. Two rabbits whose maximum tumor diameter got most closely to the mean maximum diameter were killed to observe the tumor generation and progression, such as metastasis of liver, lung, mesentery and lymph node, which were affirmed by histology. The left rabbits in each group were used to observe life span of the rabbits bearing tumor.RESULTS The tumor transplantation was successfully completed one time in the experimental group, but 3 rabbits needed second operation because of mucosa penetration in the control group. The ultrasonography examination showed that there was not apparent tumor mass in both groups in the first week. The tumor mass of the control group was significantly larger than the experimental group in the second week (P<0.001). In the third and fourth week, although the tumor mass of the control group was still larger than the experimental group, the difference was not significant. Emaciation appeared in both groups between the fourth and sixth weeks and cachexia presented gradually. Rabbits in the control group died between 5 and 7 weeks...
