Background:The relationship between neuroticism and cardiac autonomic nervous response to Low-frequency Electrical Wave Stimulation at Nei_Guan & Jianshi acupuncture points is not well known. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between neuroticism and cardiac autonomic nervous response to Electrical Wave Stimulation. Methods:Thirty healthy volunteers, without obvious mental illness, are recruited from the community. They are randomizedly divided into control, experimental and compared group. During the experimental intervention, the control group received nothing stimulation but just supine resting, the experimental group received Low-frequency Electrical Wave Stimulation at Nei_Guan & Jianshi acupuncture points, and the compared group received Low-frequency Electrical Wave Stimulation at non-acupuncture point for 10 minutes. Their cardiac autonomic functions were measured by continuously monitoring their heart rate and blood pressure (BP) in supine position during pre-experimental phase for 10 min., experimental phase for 10 min., and post-experimental phase for 10 min.. The heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed by spectral analysis and the geometric method. Results:The cardiac autonomic functions were no significant difference among those three group during pre-experimental phase. There is significantly lower in HR and BP during experimental and post-experimental phase than those during pre-experimental phase in the control and compared group, but not in experimental group. The experimental group revealed relatively higher in the standard deviation of the NN. interval (SDNN) and total power (TP) during experimental phase, and increased in BP for whom systolic BP (SBP) below 110mmHg and decreased in BP for whom SBP above 120mmHg.The score of neuroticism is highest in those lowest SBP(<110mmHg), and lowest score of neuroticism in those moderate SBP (110-120mmHg).Conclusions:Low-frequency Electrical Wave Stimulation at Nei_Guan & Jianshi acupuncture points is significantly increased in parasympathetic function (SDNN) and maintaining the homeostasis of BP. The subjects with lowest score of neuroticism revealed least fluctuating in BP during Low-frequency Electrical Wave Stimulation at Nei_Guan & Jianshi acupuncture points.
