The subject of this dissertation is shibamiao, which will be discussed as one of the collective concept of art history in the dissertation, and the author want to decipher the meanings of art history and cultural history in the evolution of this concept. The first appear of shibamiao was in a how-to-paint book named Huishizhimeng edited by Zou Dezhong. The dissertation made a careful study of this book and its editor and find the book was in fact the reflection of the taste of Zhe School which prevailed in Hang Zhou in late 15th century and early 16th century.In the mid-16th century to 17th century, Huishizhimeng and shibamiao were adapted by several elite people, such as He Liangjun, Zhan jingfeng, Zhou Lujing, Wang Keyu, and transformed its significance from the techniques of painter to the glossary of connoisseur.The concept of shibamiao remained unchangible till the mid-19th century. In late Qing dynasty, the illustration of shibamiao emerged in a book named Haixian Shibamiao Huafatu which was published in Japan. The author of this book was a Japanese painter named Oda Kaisen(1785-1862)who was one of the famous Edo period Nanga painters. The dissertation want to argue that the illustrations of shibamiao appeared in ca.1850 reflected the cultural interaction between Kyodo and Shanghai.
