| This dissertation is aimed to make a study of the origin, system, forming method, structure, content, meaning, function, and classification of Mongolian idioms employing the theory and method of cognitive linguistics. The dissertation consists of three chapters; introduction, chapter one, chapter two, chapter three and conclusion.The introduction introduces the reasons for selecting topic, materials, research aims, methods, innovative points and previous research.Chapter one points out some theoretical problems concerning Mongolian idioms and suggests the importance of studying Mongolian idioms using new theory and methodology after analyzing the present status of research on Mongolian idioms by traditional linguistic methods. Also, it presents unsolved problems which exist in the study of Mongolian idioms.The second chapter gives an analysis to the origin, system and forming method of Mongolian idioms and then some new viewpoints are presented.The third chapter presents the whole meaning of Mongolian idioms, the meaning of its form and content, the meaning of its characteristics and value. Also suggestions on classification of Mongolian idioms according to the meaning and forming method are offered. In addition, it points out the functions of the idioms should be divided into three types, namely, cultural, cognitive and lingual function and an analysis is made on linguistic elements and the non-linguistic related to each function.The conclusion is the review and summary of the whole thesis. Also it is enclosed with the examples of the idioms, which is classified according to their forming methods, and their explanations.
