Shanghai is the birthplace of the Chinese comic. Since the end of the Qing Dynasty, the western culture came into Shanghai. Shanghai made the western art with the local culture closely together with its inclusive characteristics, and there were newspapers, pictorial and mass communication books in Shanghai. Then, Chinese comic with the power of newspaper into the public's view, and it caused the attention of the public with its humor, irony, and the qualities of wisdom. This paper based on Shanghai comic in various historical periods of the major works, attempts to analyze the visual and cultural qualities of it and summarize its characteristics.The study consists of five chapters with the course of development of the Shanghai comic history. The first chapter is about "Shanghai comic in the end Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China", and the research of its background, the content and the form, in order to read the features of this new thing borned with the media under the visual culture. The second chapter is about "Shanghai comic in the twentieth century of20-40years". It reseaches the several well-known caricaturists in Shanghai at that time and discusses the comic development and reflect the visual culture phenomenon in the early twentieth century, the past and the1920s, the golden1930s, the period of Anti-Japanese War and the period of China's War of Liberation. The third chapter is about "Shanghai comic after1949". The study is about the characteristics of Shanghai comic in1950s, the period of China's Cultural Revolution and the status of Shanghai comic development with the entry of Japanese comic.The fourth chapter is about "the Chinese comic development in the twenty-first century". Compared with the Chinese and Japanese comic, the paper attempts to analyze how the Japanese comic to combine art and commerce, and to discuss the necessity of the comic grading system and the feasibility of the comic industry's development. Thus, it will give some advice on the Shanghai's comic industry, even the Chinese comic industry. And the last part is the summarize of the whole study.Shanghai comic grew up by the Chinese democratic revolution and the war.When I organize the the history of Shanghai comic, I see the colorful collection of visual images with its background, content and form.1also find the artists to promote their ideas and viewpoints through the comic in history of each period, and the more important is to see they set up the spirit of independent thinking by way of humor and irony."Irony" and "humor" is comic's two most obvious features, from the study I attempts to describe Shanghai's comic use of "irony" and "humor" to show the spirit of the artists of independent thinking, and to describe comic is one of the most effective visual image forms to enlighten people thinking independently and open its mind. At the same time, I try to find a way how to make the students thinking independently in the art teaching, and try to complement the style of "Shanghai culture", enrich the content of its images as the center. In addition, the paper tries to fill the blank of the China's Cultural Revolution comic images.
